Though perhaps better known for its mass produced racing bikes produced in France through the 50, 60s and 70s, Gitane sponsored a number of high profile professional teams and have had no less than five Tour de France winners riding for them, including greats such as Bernard Hinault and Laurent Fignon! Gitane have been making bicycle parts and bikes since 1926 and at their height were one of the largest exporters of high quality racing bikes to the USA.
This intriguing French touring or randonneur frame has some wonderful features, and was obviously built by a skilled constructeur. The frame is fillet brazed and built in a hellenic style, whereby the seatstays start forward of the seat tube toward the rear of the top tube, this makes the rear end stiffer, and in this case leads to a very neat rear brake cable routing - over a roller and through the seat tube and seatpost to actuate a cantilever brake. Amongst a number of braze-ons the frame is equipped with a single downtube shifter and a built in chainstay mounted bracket for a Cyclo rear derailleur. The frame has built in racks and mudguard stays with a front bag support. It has been repainted and unused since, the orginal decals have been lost and we unfortunately cannot quite pin down who built this lovely machine!
The frame's been carefully checked by one of our mechanics to confirm the alignment's correct and there's no damage to the threads. If there are any minor issues worth noting we will do so in the overview section below. Please take a good look at the detailed photos so you can see the cosmetic condition of the frame before you buy.
