Bike Porn of The Week #1: '78 Kessels Merckx

by Pedal Pedlar March 28, 2015

We used to post lots of sexy bike porn on various channels a long time ago, and we decided it's time to resurrect it. So, we're going to aim to post a new sensual slice of bike porn every day on here, with our own contribution available for sale once a week.

So, we're kicking it off with a very new addition to our collection...

1978 Kessels Eddy Merckx Team C&A

We've been holding this baby back for the summer. After many, many hours of loving restoration... it's an original Kessels built C&A Merckx (the team The Cannibal rode for in his final season before retirement).

This bike is exceptionally rare, the 1st we've had through the door with so many rare 1st generation Super Record parts all on the same machine! Titanium pedals, Titanium bottom bracket, titanium bolt 1st generation rear mech, 1st gen 2-bolt Super Record seatpost... PLUS the most beautiful (and lightest) classic rims ever made... Mavic Record Du Monde L'Heure Sprints! Wow.

A genuine piece of history this one, and must have belonged to an amazing (or incredibly rich) rider, most likely a team member with this type of spec, but unfortunately we will never know.

Still sporting the original cork bar plugs. A special finishing touch, so typical of the era.

Oh, and this machine is an absolute dream to ride. Test ridden by all the staff today to get a feeling of what it was like to ride alongside the big man in the 70s. A dream come true.

See it in all it's glorious detail in-store or full gallery & spec here.

With a nickname like ‘the Cannibal’ you’d expect Eddy Merckx to be something of a tough character, but off the bike he is notoriously warm and amiable. On the bike was a different matter, his desire to win was immense, and the results were unparalleled.
