Pedal Type - this is just a guide to give you an idea of the pedal type, but any pedal can technically be used for any purpose. Track pedals are designed without the pointed 'quill' for safety though, so it's best to only use track pedals for this purpose. Most track pedals, along with quill & aero road pedals are designed to be used with toe clips & straps for best performance.
Pedal Threads - this must match the thread on your cranks. Sometimes it's stamped on the end of the crank arm, but most bikes use a standard thread of 9/16” x 20 tpi. The exceptions being older French bikes, bikes with cheaper one-piece type chainsets and Shimano’s Dyna Drive system (easily identifiable as the pedal holes are about an inch wide!).

With a history spanning almost a century, and with both world and Italian national champion wins, Berma are perhaps not as widely known as they should be. Hailing from Padova, Italy, Berma built very fine frames in the Italian race tradition - lightweight, aggressive, beautiful and often bedecked in the finest Italian parts from the period. Legendary contract builders Billato built for the brand during their early years too.
This Berma Professional is probably from the 1980s and is built from Italian Oria TT 0.9 tubing. The red and white graphic paint job is typically Italian and of the time, the contrasting chrome forks and drive side chainstay show great attention to detail. This is a classic Italian frameset in a smaller size and will make a vintage (or maybe even neo-retro!) build.
If you're taking part in L'Eroica or a similar vintage event, this frame is of the correct age, so you won't be disqualified for being a rule breaker!
The frame's been carefully checked by one of our mechanics to confirm the alignment's correct and there's no damage to the threads. Track pedals are designed without the pointed 'quill' for safety though, so it's best to only use track pedals for this purpose. Most track pedals, along with quill & aero road pedals are designed to be used with toe clips & straps for best performance.
Pedal Threads - this must match the thread on your cranks. Sometimes it's stamped on the end of the crank arm, but most bikes use a standard thread of 9/16” x 20 tpi. The exceptions being older French bikes, bikes with cheaper one-piece type chainsets and Shimano’s Dyna Drive system (easily identifiable as the pedal holes are about an inch wide!).

This compact French road frameset carries no brand or obvious signs of any specific builder, but it was obviously built with great care using Colmbus Aelle tubing and good quality lugs. Probably dating from the mid 90s, the frame has semi-horizontal dropouts and shot-in seatstays giving it a sleek, racy look. The black and green fade paint work contrasts nicely with the chrome fork and chromed rear end and is in fantastic sparkling condition.

This extremely eye-catching fully chromed road frameset is branded Marino, which we believe was a small bike shop in Italy. It really is a very nice frame indeed, the long tangs with cut-outs on the fork, head tube and bottom bracket lugs are the kind of subtle attention to detail only master craftsmen bother with. Geoffrey Butler Cycles were a South London mainstay during the 1960s and 70s, building high quality frames for club riders and professionals alike. Geoffrey was the brother of the more well known Claud Butler, and sadly passed away just a year after his eponymous brand began in 1956. Several legendary London framebuilders were thought to have built for the shop including both Charlie and Chas Roberts, and also the legendary Cliff Shrub. The shop was one of the last of the London Lightweights to keep going, alas they finally closed their doors in 2021 :(
This repainted Geoffrey Butler is likely to have been built in the 1980s, and is neatly put together with a Reynolds 531 ST (Super Tourist) tube set. Likely built as an 'all-rounder' or light-touring / audax bike, this frame set takes 27" wheels and has ample clearance for mudguards and comfortable, wide tyres. The Super Tourist tube set is lightweight yet strong, it's a good weight for the size and is clearly built with great care.

Mino Denti was a great Italian racer who rode for some fantastic teams throughout the 1960s, he would probably be classed as a super-domestique these days as he was often found riding for the bigger names on his team. After his racing career ended in the late 1960s, Mino worked in the management side of professional cycling before taking the well-trodden path to starting his own bicycle business in 1979. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Mino decided he would do the building himself, and whilst there are very few Mino built frames out there, they're all beautifully finished and often sports unusual features such as hand-crimped tubes or bent seat tubes.
At just 48cm, this Mino Denti Mistral is just about as small a vintage road bike frame as you are likely to find. Built from super lightweight Columbus butted tubing and with aerodynamics in mind, it probably dates from the late 1980s. The shifter mounts are located on top of the downtube and the cables are routed into the downtube, then out again by the bottom bracket where they loop round on the outside of the frame to the derailleurs. The most interesting and unique feature here though has to be the Columbus Air flattened fork and chainstays for super aero appeal, and of course the short head tube promotes a streamlined head down/bum up position on the bike.

Founded in the latter part of the 19th Century, Carlton managed almost 100 years of bicycle manufacturing in the East Midlands. They were amongst the most sought after and readily available British bikes of the 1930s, thanks to some nifty salesmanship from Dan O'Donovan who was to later take over the company, and whose son Gerald became a frame designing legend. Following a buy-out by Raleigh in 1960 and a rebrand for the US market to 'Raleigh-Carlton' the company grew and grew through the bike boom with the doors finally shutting at their Worksop factory in 1981.
This late 1940s or very early 1950s Massed Start is a wonderful post-war all-rounder. Like all Carltons at the time, the Massed Start was mass-produced, but still to some extent customisable by the buyer, with colour, braze-on and lug style options.
