Vintage Bike Dating Pt1: Shimano Date Codes

Vintage Bike Dating Pt1: Shimano Date Codes

Dating a classic bike can be very tricky. Your first port of call should always be the frame serial number, but that's not always an option as many frames don't have frame numbers stamped on them, and if they do they are often impossible to decipher...

Two Very Good People

One of the best things about having a shop is the people we get to meet along the way.

Almost four years ago we met the lovely Peanut Vendors (Becky Nolan, and Barnaby Read), and began renting the space in the back of their wonderful furniture shop to take Pedal Pedlar from an online only presence to an actual shop.

Not long after moving in, an older gentleman wandered into the workshop and started rummaging through a pile of old Cinelli handlebars. "How much for these" he asked. "What about these" etc etc. He left empty handed and seemed like another local just having a nosey around. A few weeks later he came in again with a similar result. Fast forward four years and that same older gentleman is still visiting the shop, still leaving empty handed, but we now know what an extraordinary gentleman he is....

Perfect Imperfections: Van Gogh of Cycling

Finishing a bicycle frame is no doubt an art, and we have great admiration for flawless paint, highly polished chrome and perfectly applied transfers. Vintage Steel Bike Frames For Sale

We just added a few luuurvley steel road bike frames to the site, including some real gems. 6 new vintage bicycle frames added, including a rather rare 1972 Gazelle Champion Mondial, a 1950s classic British Viking and a stupendously rare 1950s Marceau vintage French number. Most of the new batch are built from either Reynolds 531 or Columbus tubing, and although these are all technically road bike frames, they can also be used as singlespeed or fixie frames as they all feature horizontal dropouts.

Save The Duell

Every so often we face a moral dilemma in the shop. If a bike hangs around for too long, we have to make extra effort to sell them. Bikes that have been around for longer than a few months usually get reduced, then reduced a little more. The next step is the painful one...

Stuck Bottom Bracket?

Stuck bottom bracket? Next time your sweating it out with a pair of pin spanners, try putting it next to an electric fan or any non-abrasive heater for an hour or so. It simply heats up the years of grease and grime, plus expands the bottom bracket shell (fractionally!). Work fast though because the frame cools down quickly.
