Though perhaps better known for its mass produced racing bikes produced in France through the 50, 60s and 70s, Gitane sponsored a number of high profile professional teams and have had no less than five Tour de France winners riding for them, including greats such as Bernard Hinault and Laurent Fignon! Gitane have been making bicycle parts and bikes since 1926 and at their height were one of the largest exporters of high quality racing bikes to the USA.

Probably dating from the late 1970s this frameset is a typical mid-range Gitane with a decent lugged construction and basic braze-ons. The chromed rear end implies the frame is of a good quality and the BCM lugs were widely used through the 1970s, the frame has cable guides for front and rear derailleurs, the rear brake cable and has one set of eyelets on the rear. There is plenty of clearance on the rear so a fairly wide tyre with mudguard can be used.

Holdsworth started as a side project by William Frank (Sandy) Holdsworth in the late 1920s after he bought a bike shop in Putney and asked his brother in law to run it. The business did very well and by the end of the 1930s had three more shops. With a reputation already for providing excellent cycling clothing, the company employed the legendary Bill Hurlow to build frames for them in 1938. In the 50s and 60s Holdsworth bought the business and brands of Freddie Grubb, Claud Butler and Macleans, all famous London builders, but they had become too big to offer the personalised frame-building they were once known for. In the 1970s the company split into two factions and Roy Thame took over the W.F. Holdsworth shop, continuing to build bikes under the Holdsworth brand into the 1990s.

This mid 80s W. F. Holdsworth frame is probably one of the frame only options available at the time and is very well put together. The Reynolds 531 tube set is built with precise lugs and a semi-sloping Haden fork crown, finished in a very dark metallic grey, almost black. The frame has no mudguard eyelets but the clearance is good, it would build into a lively and comfortable every day bike, or of course a classic Eroica build!

Founded in the latter part of the 19th Century, Carlton managed almost 100 years of bicycle manufacturing in the East Midlands. They were amongst the most sought after and readily available British bikes of the 1930s, thanks to some nifty salesmanship from Dan O'Donovan who was to later take over the company, and whose son Gerald became a frame designing legend. Following a buy-out by Raleigh in 1960 and a rebrand for the US market to 'Raleigh-Carlton' the company grew and grew through the bike boom with the doors finally shutting at their Worksop factory in 1981.

The Pro-Am was produced in the last few years of the Carlton Worksop factory years, before the company was bought out by Raleigh. Built from Reynolds 531 main tubes it was a comfy, well built bike designed for light touring or every day use. Specced with mid-range aluminium components the bike became the Pro-Am 12 in 1981 when it went up to six speed at the rear.

One of the last Worksop built Carltons to be produced 1981, this Pro-Am 12 still has it's original pale blue paint and transfers. With good clearances, geometry on the comfortable side and double butted Reynolds 531 main tubes this is ready to be built up as a reliable classic or L'Eroica bike.

Mercier cycles built frames and full bikes near Lyon in France for 65 years, sponsoring some top riders who wore the iconic purple and yellow jersey ,including Louison Bobet, Cyrille Guimard, Raymond Poulidor and Joop Zoetemelk. Mercier produced a large range from children's bikes to top end racing machines, they were a high volume builder and had a great deal of success during the 'bike boom' years, producing 150,000 bikes in 1975 alone. Their top end bikes are often finished in purple or pink (or somewhere in between!), like the garish colours of the racing team jerseys, Emile Mercier claiming at the time that “It may not be pretty, but at least we stand out in the peloton”.

Though made in large numbers, the Special Tour de France was a nicely made bike and sat near the top of Mercier's large range of bikes. The name celebrates the company's long history of sponsoring professional race teams, having been involved in every edition from 1933 to 1983.

This Mercier Special Tour de France is an early 1970s model, built from Vitus tubes and with a classic purple paint job. Although not cosmetically perfect, the frame will make the basis for a solid L'Eroica restoration or even qualify for use as a reliable daily commuter.

Though branded with Battaglin decals from the late 1980s, this appears to be a curious mix of a Bottecchia built frame with a Berma pantographed fork. The frame lugs carry the distinctive Bottecchia cut out shape, and the internal cable routing is in a style they used too, whilst the fork carries the Berma 'B' on the fork crown. The purple and neon yellow colour scheme is reminiscent of the Team Jolly Componibili colours, who rode on Battaglins in the 80s and 90s. With Campagnolo dropouts front and rear and a slotted bottom bracket this is a well made frame, regardless of its slightly confused identity!

If you're taking part in L'Eroica or a similar vintage event, this frame is of the correct age, so you won't be disqualified for being a rule breaker!

Lexpres was a small cycle shop in Antwerp, Belgium that built (or had built for them) bikes bearing their name in the late 1970s and early 1980s. There are very few examples of their bikes still in circulation, but it seems that track bikes were a speciality.

It is built from lightweight but strong Ishiwata 022 tubing with Shimano horizontal dropouts and Bocama lugs, and is not drilled for a brake. The frame is stamped '77' on the bottom bracket shell which given the frame details suggest this could well be the year of manufacture. With it's original paintwork and transfers this classic frameset is ready to be built up and put back to work on the boards.

Peugeot are perhaps the best known mass producers of bicycles and have a long and illustrious history. Cycles Peugeot began producing Penny Farthings in 1886, quickly moving with the technological advancements of the day and becoming one of the world's largest and most successful bike builders through the post war period and bike boom years. With an astonishing 500 models of bike available in the 1970s Peugeot were ubiquitous in Europe and North America, sales were aided by ongoing success with the factory professional team which won an unprecedented 10 Tour de France titles. The company strived to use French built parts on all of its bikes for many years, and there are many brilliant examples of their bikes fully decked out with parts from Stronglight, Simplex and Mavic.

The Puymorens was Peugeot's top of the range steel framed race bike and was used by the pro team in continental classic races. Built from Reynolds 531 'Professionnel' with their neat quill seatpost, the Puymorens was a lightweight race bike designed to go fast.

This mid 80s Puymorens has been refurbished by Argos at some point and carries Argos branding instead of the original Peugeot team logos. We assume that at the same time it was repainted the frame was converted to internal brake cable routing as this model was not available with this specification and there is a faint trace of where the original top tube cable stops would have lived. It is nicely finished in a typical Peugeot grey with chromed dropouts and drive side chainstay and some period brand decals.

Shortly after winning the Giro and the Vuelta in just 48 days, Giovanni Battaglin started his eponymous bike company. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Battaglin built a small number of high quality frames for professional riders, including Stephen Roche's bikes the year he won the triple crown (two Grand Tours and the World Championships). Giovanni Battaglin is still building beautiful steel bikes by hand from his workshop in Veneto today.

Resplendent in the neon yellow and purple colours of the famous 'Jolly Club 88' team, this racy frameset screams 1980s. Built from Columbus Aelle tubing, and with Battaglin pantographed bottom bracket shell, seatstay caps and fork this could be a classic Italian race bike. The World Champion decals point to it being produced after Stephen Roche's win piloting a Battaglin in 1987.

Peugeot are perhaps the best known mass producers of bicycles and have a long and illustrious history. Cycles Peugeot began producing Penny Farthings in 1886, quickly moving with the technological advancements of the day and becoming one of the world's largest and most successful bike builders through the post war period and bike boom years. With an astonishing 500 models of bike available in the 1970s Peugeot were ubiquitous in Europe and North America, sales were aided by ongoing success with the factory professional team which won an unprecedented 10 Tour de France titles. The company strived to use French built parts on all of its bikes for many years, and there are many brilliant examples of their bikes fully decked out with parts from Stronglight, Simplex and Mavic.

This original 1952 Peugeot PC 40 frameset was built at the height of Peugeot's powers as a bike manufacturer when they were producing nearly a quarter of a million bikes annually. The PC 40 was a lightweight 'Tourisme' model and would have been offered like this and as a dropped top tube 'step-through' version. Designed to be a quality every day bike with mudguards and a few gears operated from a top tube shifter, alongside the comfy and practical 650B wheels this example still has its original paint finish and decals and is ready to be put back into service again.

Columbia rose from the ashes of Carlton cycles, whose closure in 1981 led to a team of newly redundant frame-builders starting their own brand in Worksop. Of those framebuilders Dave Marsh is perhaps the best known, the company did not last long and it is not clear how many bikes were produced, those that were though are of a very high quality. The frames were built in the tradition of those famous large-scale British custom builders with fine but not overly elaborate lugs, Reynolds tubing and a classic finish, often with hand-painted logos in the case of Columbia.

This mid 80s frame is really nicely put together, likely built from Reynolds 531 and is in great original condition with a sparkling metallic blue finish and hand-painted logos. Excellently executed with long point lugs, divers helmet cable stops and Campagnolo dropouts, it also has good clearance with provision for mudguards - a classic British all-rounder for someone with long legs!

Drilling - the number of holes for the spokes.

Rim Size - the sizing given by the manufacturer, these can be confusing so we also give the ISO diameter too for clarification.

ISO Diameter - the diameter of the rim at the point where the tyre is seated (bead seat diameter). This is a universal measurement, often displayed on tyres as 28-622 or similar, 28 referring to the tyre width and 622 being the ISO diameter in millimetres.

Valve Type - presta valves are the thin ones and Schraeder are the fatter ones. Schraeder valve holes will also accept the older Dunlop/Woods type valves.

Rim Width (OD) - the width of the rim, measured from the outside of one wall to the other.

Rim Height - the overall height of the rim, measured to the highest point of the rim’s profile.
