Raleigh are one of the oldest and most well-known bike companies in the world, thanks to their huge success with early safety bicycles; lightweight Roadsters; cult classics like the RSW and Chopper, and some big professional bike race wins in the 70s and 80s. Beginning in Nottingham in the late 1880s, the company expanded rapidly and by 1913 it was the largest manufacturer of bicycles in the world, though production slowed down through the two World Wars, by the late 1940s the lightweight Roadster was selling phenomonally well in the US and their high profile continued in to the 1970s. Raleigh bought out several smaller brands over the years adding Carlton, Humber and BSA to their portfolio, they were themselves then bought by competitor Tube Investments creating the massive Ti-Raleigh business in 1960. Raleigh's racing success arguably reached a peak in 1980 when Joop Zoetemelk won the Tour de France riding an iconic red Team Ti-Raleigh, they continued to sponsor road teams and also had some success racing MTBs in the 90s with Dave Baker.
The 1990s incarnation of Raleigh's Special Products Division (known as RSP for short), was a cutting edge bike building facility that specialized in mixed material bonded bikes labelled Dyna-Tech. The bonding process allowed RSP to mix and match titanium, lightweight steel and Metal Matrix in various combinations to offer the best qualities of each material where it was needed, and still keep the price down. The bonded Dyna-Tech frames turned out to be extremely versatile and were ridden to victory in MTB, cyclocross, track and road races across the World. RSP also offered their by now legendary hand-built steel touring and randonneur frames, all from their Nottingham factory.
The 1993 Dyna-Tech MT4 was a frame only option from Raleigh's Special Products Division. Comprising titanium main tubes, chainstays and dropouts, with Mn-Mo (Manganese-Molybdenum) seat stays bonded into specialy designed lugs. The frame was designed for a short travel suspension fork or suspension corrected rigid fork, as expected with all that titanium it is super light too. The metallic sparkle paint work is exceptional, this bike having once been partially built but never ridden, it was someone's highly specced build at one time but never made it out of the showroom.
The frame's been carefully checked by one of our mechanics to confirm the alignment's correct and there's no damage to the threads. If there are any minor issues worth noting we will do so in the overview section below. A London institution, Condor Cycles have had premises on Gray's Inn Road for nearly 75 years, having produced hand made bikes for pop stars, olympians and world champions alike. Originally a Triumph dealer, the shop that was to become Condor Cycles was started by Monty Young with some help from Harry Rensch, building hand made frames just down the road from Pedal Pedlar HQ back in 1948. After a brief hiatus for Monty to do some national service, Condor employed the highly skilled BIll Hurlow to build their bikes in 1954, continueing to do so until 1968. With intricately cut fancy lugs the Hurlow built Condors are now highly prized. Through the next few decades Condor continued to nurture new British racing talent and build high end bikes, they also managed to keep up with the industry and adapt their bikes to the new materials making bikes from aluminium and carbon. Despite a shift to mass producing bikes in the far east, Condor still produce custom and off the peg steel frames at their facility in Italy.
Though best known for their road bikes Condor built a number of mountain bikes through the 1980s, offering custom and semi-custom options. This frameset probably dates from 1989, the Reynolds 531 All Terrain decal in this style was used up until then and the frame arrived with us with a a few first generation Campagnolo Euclid parts, which was available at the time. As you'd expect from a frame builder of Condor's repute it is very nicely made and would have been a very expensive custom bike back in the day. There is a small dent on the top tube and some slight deformation to the seat tube below the seat clamp, none of which affect the structural integrity.
The frame's been carefully checked by one of our mechanics to confirm the alignment's correct and there's no damage to the threads. Saracen can lay claim to being one of the very first British mountain bike companies, and certainly the first to get one of their bikes to the top of an actual mountain. Started in 1983 by Brian Staples, the company were a few years behind the USA who already had a number of established mountain bike brands, but they built a nicely specced bike with good quality Suntour, and then Shimano gears. They achieved a huge marketing boost when cousins Nick and Richard Crane rode two Saracens up Mount Kilimanjaro in 1984, proving how tough and versatile the mountain bike was. Soon after, the company was bought by Bluemels and later sold on again, they sold a huge number of bikes through the 80s and 90s but disappeared to be relaunched in the early 2000s.
The Trekker sat in the middle of Saracen's MTB range from 1987 into the early 90s offering their expertise in frame design at a lower price point. It started off as a Tange steel frame with U brakes front and rear, and later moved to an aluminium frame, equipped with hydraulic rim brakes by 1991.
From 1987, this is the first version of the Trekker and is in great condition for its age with the 'maize yellow' paint and original decals still looking good. Built from Tange steel tubing and designed for U brakes front and rear, this could be built up into a really versatile every day bike, or put back to its original guise as an all terrain mountain climber.

Though relatively speaking Trevor Jarvis (TJ) Cycles is something of a newcomer, they were best known for (re)producing a classic, innovative frame design known as 'The Flying Gate'. In 1979 Trevor decided that, as a life-long cyclist and owner of an established engineering business, he should start building frames, and he looked to the past at the iconic muti-tubed short wheelbase Flying Gate design. With its distinctive silhouette and clever positioning of tubing, the Gate was originally designed in the 1930s by Bill Baines and the bike quickly gained a reputation as being very fast. Alongside the Gate, TJ Cycles produced custom bikes in whatever style was required until Trevor hung up his torch a few years ago.
This TJ Cycles branded frame is nicely built from Reynolds 531 with a neat lug set and sloping fork crown. Though branded TJ Cycles we are unable to confirm the frame was built by Trevor Jarvis as it lacks a frame number and this traditional style of frame was not often built by TJ Cycles so it is hard to find comparisons. Likely dating from the 1980s this is a classic British road frame with a decent clearances and a lovely blue metallic paint job.

Harry Hall was a racer, frame-builder and world class mechanic who opened his popular shop in the centre of Manchester over 60 years ago. From their base in Hyde Road, the business began building lightweight frames and wheels for local customers while Harry's reputation as a mechanic grew, eventually becoming team mechanic for Tom Simpson (including during his ill-fated 1967 Tour de France ride) and later as the official mechanic for the world championships in Leicester. It was while he was out with the professional racers across Europe that Harry saw the high-end products being produced there and he became one of the first British shops to start to import racing frames, parts and clothing from the continent. The business continued to offer UK built frames under their own brand name built by contract manufacturers who were able to offer a higher number of bikes for a lower price point, the shop is still a Manchester cycling hub to this day.
More than likely built in the mid to late 1980s this high end road frameset features Cinelli lugs and 'spoiler' bottom bracket shell, internal cable routing and a very fetching royal blue re-paint that contrasts nicely with the chrome forks and rear end. Nice and light at 2.6kg for the frame and fork combined, this was probably built at Autostrada for the shop as Harry had hung his tourch up by the time this was built.

An important character in the South London cycling scene, Ken Bird was a master wheel-builder, team mechanic and shop owner who, along with his brother Alec, pushed the boundaries of frame manufacture. Starting with Claud Butler in the 1950s, Ken went on to manage a shop for Hinds and then Clive Stuart Cycles, he was the British team mechanic for three years until 1968, the year Tom Simpson died during the race. Though legend has it Ken and Alec were not exactly the best of friends, it is thought that Alec built some frames branded Ken Bird, with other local builders including Holdsworth and Roberts known to have built others. Ken Bird had a reputation in the 1970s for pushing how light a competitive TT machine could be, with lugs, frame tubes and components all heavily modified, drilled and lightened.
This early 1970s TT machine has all the hallmarks of a high end, lightweight TT bike as was typical of the race-winning machines Ken Bird were producing at the time. With a two digit 'BBC" frame number, drilled bottom bracket and rear dropout plus neatly brazed-on brake bolts, this was a machine built purely for performance. Fastback seat stays, a sloping fork crown and minimal lugs also indicate the high quality of this frame, and although the re-spray is not perfect, it could easily look like the top of the range bike it once was.

Holdsworth started as a side project by William Frank (Sandy) Holdsworth in the late 1920s after he bought a bike shop in Putney and asked his brother in law to run it. The business did very well and by the end of the 1930s had three more shops. With a reputation already for providing excellent cycling clothing, the company employed the legendary Bill Hurlow to build frames for them in 1938. In the 50s and 60s Holdsworth bought the business and brands of Freddie Grubb, Claud Butler and Macleans, all famous London builders, but they had become too big to offer the personalised frame-building they were once known for. In the 1970s the company split into two factions and Roy Thame took over the W.F. Holdsworth shop, continuing to build bikes under the Holdsworth brand into the 1990s.
This mid 80s W. F. Holdsworth frame is probably one of the frame only options available at the time and is very well put together. The Reynolds 531 tube set is built with precise lugs and a semi-sloping Haden fork crown, finished in a very dark metallic grey, almost black. The frame has no mudguard eyelets but the clearance is good, it would build into a lively and comfortable every day bike, or of course a classic Eroica build!

Owen Blower was a successful British racer in the late 1950s who went on to start a shop in Leicester, selling bikes bearing his name until the 1980s. Racing predominately in Britain, Owen took the title of Best British All Rounder (BBAR) and set a new 12 hour time trial record that would stand for 9 years in 1958. Owen also went on to race across the continent, including the Peace Race, and finished 5th overall in the 1959 Milk Race. His shop in Leicester sold British built lightweights, specialising in time trial machines which were built by contract builders including Mike Kowal of Autostrada.
This neat 1970s Blower branded road frame was probably built by Mike Kowal at Autostrada. With Campagnolo ends, long-point lugs and a Reynolds 531 tube set this is a solid frame that will build into a super every day bike. The original transfers are showing their age but could be cleaned off and replaced fairly easily.

After a few years of building high-end, Italian style lightweight bicycles under the name Whitaker and Mapplebeck, the company incorporated with the Pennine Cycle Accessory Company to produce their frames under the name 'Pennine'. The accessory arm of the business continued to manufacture parts with a focus on C02 inflators (the frames often have a braze-on for mounting these) and the framebuilders put together a few hundred lightweights per year from their base in Bradford.
Though fantastically refurbished recently we believe this Pennine frame is a fairly early one as it has a four digit serial number. More than likely a 'Re della Corsa' frame set that has been updated later in its life with braze-ons for downtube shifters and brake cable guides on the top tube. With 'Italian' lugs and the tricolore on the seat tube this is a beautiful example of Italian style meeting Yorkshire craftsmanship!

Seat Tube (ctc) - we measure from the centre of the bottom bracket shell up to the centre line of the top tube to give a consistent measurement regardless of frame design (ctc means centre to centre).
Top Tube (ctc) - this is measured from the centre of the head tube to the centre of the seat tube, along the centre of the top tube.
Chainstay Length - measured from the centre of the bottom bracket shell to the centre point of the rear dropout.
Wheelbase - measured from the centre of the front fork dropout to the centre point of the rear dropout.
Front & Rear Spacing - measured from the inside of one dropout to the other. The dropouts on steel frames can be stretched or squeezed a few mm but it's always best to avoid this if possible, aluminium or carbon frames should never be stretched.
Brake Drop - measured using wheels of the relevant size for the frame, as stated in the technical info section.
Headset Threads - although it's generally recommended to match threaded parts exactly, with headsets you can technically mix and match, unless you have French or the obscure old Raleigh threads, in which case you need to stick to that type.

Ellis-Briggs were one of the longest running frame builders in the UK having been established in 1936, and although the business is slightly different frames are still being made in Shipley, West Yorkshire today. From the outset Eliis-Briggs' focus was on quality and craftsmanship, with in-house master-builders and their own enamelling set up. With a country-wide reputation for fast club bikes they sponsored a number of budding racers, with Ken Russell winning the 1952 Tour of Britain aboard one of their frames as an independent rider. Building custom bikes under their own brand name 'Favori', they began to sell their frames into the US market during the bike boom, and though the landscape changed for custom bike builders in the 80s and 90s the name still lives on.
This elegantly finished Ellis-Briggs road frame was probably built in the early 1980s and is kitted out with Campagnolo's world-beating Super Record groupset. The frame is built with Reynolds 531 Professional tubing, the replacement for 531 SL and one of Reynold's lightest tube sets at the time, and hand-finished lugs. With a high quality enamelled blue paint job and chrome dropouts this is a very pretty bike, typical of their output at the time. The lightweight and equally good-looking Super Record groupset was a revelation when released and became the groupset of choice for professional cyclists and those budding amateurs that could afford it!
If you're taking part in L'Eroica or a similar vintage event, this bike is of the correct age, so you won't be disqualified for being a rule breaker!
The bike's been fully dis-assembled and professionally re-built by one of our mechanics. The frame's straight and true, and everything's been carefully cleaned and re-lubricated where necessary. If there are any minor issues worth noting we will do so in the overview section below. Please take a good look at the detailed photos so you can see the cosmetic condition of the bike before you buy.OVERVIEW

Geoffrey Butler Cycles were a South London mainstay during the 1960s and 70s, building high quality frames for club riders and professionals alike. Geoffrey was the brother of the more well known Claud Butler, and sadly passed away just a year after his eponymous brand began in 1956. Several legendary London framebuilders were thought to have built for the shop including both Charlie and Chas Roberts, and also the legendary Cliff Shrub. The shop was one of the last of the London Lightweights to keep going, alas they finally closed their doors in 2021 :(
This repainted Geoffrey Butler is likely to have been built in the 1980s, and is neatly put together with a Reynolds 531 ST (Super Tourist) tube set. Likely built as an 'all-rounder' or light-touring / audax bike, this frame set takes 27" wheels and has ample clearance for mudguards and comfortable, wide tyres. The Super Tourist tube set is lightweight yet strong, it's a good weight for the size and is clearly built with great care.
If you're taking part in L'Eroica or a similar vintage event, this frame is of the correct age, so you won't be disqualified for being a rule breaker!

A Staffordshire institution, Henry Burton cycles have been building and selling bikes out of their small shop since 1950. Henry and his wife Joyce were both keen cyclists; Joyce became national road champion in 1950 and Henry started to build custom frames from their shop around the same time, the shop is still a family business with the third generation now involved. Specialising in lightweight road machines with hand cut lugs, Henry Burton custom frames were sold alongside less glamourous frames built by contract builders.
We believe this interesting road frame to be from the early 1970s, and was likely built by Henry Burton at the shop in Stafford as a custom order. With lightened hand-cut long-point lugs, an unusual drilled fork crown and wrap-over seat stays, it is not a standard frame by any means. It's a handsome frame in good original condition, ready to be put back together and given a good run out.

Unusually Tom Crowther is perhaps not best known for the bikes bearing his own name, but rather those bearing the name of his first bicycle business, Mercian. Tom sold Mercian in 1965 and started his own shop in Solihull selling frames and parts, with frames built by, you guessed it, Mercian. Frames bearing the Tom Crowther name are now very rare indeed, as not many were produced and the company ceased trading in the early 1990s.
Beautifully refinished by Argos cycles, this blue and orange Tom Crowther road frame probably dates from the early 1970s. Built with wrap-over stays, long-point lugs and a Cinelli style sloping fork crown, the frame also has eyelets front and rear for mudguards and ample clearance for wider tyres. The frame has clearly had little use since it was re-finished and looks magnificent in the sunshine.

Founded in the latter part of the 19th Century, Carlton managed almost 100 years of bicycle manufacturing in the East Midlands. They were amongst the most sought after and readily available British bikes of the 1930s, thanks to some nifty salesmanship from Dan O'Donovan who was to later take over the company, and whose son Gerald became a frame designing legend. Following a buy-out by Raleigh in 1960 and a rebrand for the US market to 'Raleigh-Carlton' the company grew and grew through the bike boom with the doors finally shutting at their Worksop factory in 1981.
This late 1940s or very early 1950s Massed Start is a wonderful post-war all-rounder. Like all Carltons at the time, the Massed Start was mass-produced, but still to some extent customisable by the buyer, with colour, braze-on and lug style options. Featuring distinctively shaped lugs, mudguard braze-ons and fine attention to detail this will build into a wonderful ervey day vintage bike.

From humble South London beginnings Claud Butler built up a hugely successful business, equipping some famous racers and seeing his bikes ridden at World Championships and even the Olympics. In 1928 the enigmatic Butler opened his first shop in Clapham, with a further five shops being opened in just the next four years. During the period before the Second World War Claud Butler were at the forefront of the ‘lightweight’ movement and were highly regarded by club riders looking for a good quality and fast bike. The advent of war greatly affected all businesses and Claud Butler never really recovered, the post was period was one of prosperity and of increased car and television ownership – both of which made an impact on bicycle sales. Claud Butler held on until almost the end of the 1950s by which time the receivers were called in, the name was bought by Holdsworth and continued to be used for high end road machines, the brand being sold again in the late 1980s.
This beautiful original finish Buccaneer frame dates from 1955, right towards the end of the original Claud Butler ownership. This is a bronze welded ‘lugless’ frame, something of a rarity amongst British builders but popular on the continent. There is no model badge left on the frame, but we have identified it as a Buccaneer thanks to the lugless construction, brake cable braze-ons, oval fork blades and pencil stays all point to this model, as seen in the 1955 catalogue. The finish is not perfect but its wonderful to see the two tone paint and original transfers on a frame that is nearly 70 years old.

Though they built a relatively small number of frames over a long period of time, Allin Cycles have an enviable reputation as one of the finest British frame-builders. From several different premises in Whitehorse Road, Croydon, Allin cycles traded between 1919 and 1998 having first partnered with Freddie Grubb and then later the successful racer Stan Butler. Just after the second world war Allin employed master craftsman Peter Cobb to build their custom road frames and he continued until his retirement in 1980. Stan was responsible for designing most of their high end models which were in turn named after him, the company was also heavily involved in bike polo with owner Ching Allin riding for one of the best teams in the country.
Probably one of the last frames to come out of the Allin shop and possibly built by the master builder Cliff Shrub, this neat mid 80s lugged road frame is a rarity. With a racy fast back/Italianate seat cluster, lightweight Reynolds 531 Professional tubing and chromed dropouts it is clearly built to a very high standard. The original dark metallic grey paint job and water slide decals are in good useable condition and it is ready to be built up and used.

The Pro-Am was produced in the last few years of the Carlton Worksop factory years, before the company was bought out by Raleigh. Built from Reynolds 531 main tubes it was a comfy, well built bike designed for light touring or every day use. Specced with mid-range aluminium components the bike became the Pro-Am 12 in 1981 when it went up to six speed at the rear.
One of the last Worksop built Carltons to be produced 1981, this Pro-Am 12 still has it's original pale blue paint and transfers. With good clearances, geometry on the comfortable side and double butted Reynolds 531 main tubes this is ready to be built up as a reliable classic or L'Eroica bike.

Introduced in 1971 and only in the catalogue for a couple of years before Raleigh took over the company, the Contre La Montre was conceived as a lightweight time trial machine - the name is French for 'against the watch'. A frame only option, built from Reynolds 531 double butted tubing with wrap-over stays and Carlton's exclusive lightweight fork crown, it was a true race machine.
The frame number on this Conte La Montre dates it to 1972, and it received a good quality re-spray at some point in the past. With part-chromed forks and rear stays, silver bands on a pearly white paint, this is a handsome bike that could be built as is, although as the paint and chrome are now a little tired, a full restoration would really make it shine again.

Columbia rose from the ashes of Carlton cycles, whose closure in 1981 led to a team of newly redundant frame-builders starting their own brand in Worksop. Of those framebuilders Dave Marsh is perhaps the best known, the company did not last long and it is not clear how many bikes were produced, those that were though are of a very high quality. The frames were built in the tradition of those famous large-scale British custom builders with fine but not overly elaborate lugs, Reynolds tubing and a classic finish, often with hand-painted logos in the case of Columbia.
This mid 80s frame is really nicely put together, likely built from Reynolds 531 and is in great original condition with a sparkling metallic blue finish and hand-painted logos. Excellently executed with long point lugs, divers helmet cable stops and Campagnolo dropouts, it also has good clearance with provision for mudguards - a classic British all-rounder for someone with long legs!
If you're taking part in L'Eroica or a similar vintage event, this frame is of the correct age, so you won't be disqualified for being a rule breaker!
The frame's been carefully checked by one of our mechanics to confirm the alignment's correct and there's no damage to the threads. If there are any minor issues worth noting we will do so in the overview section below. Please take a good look at the detailed photos so you can see the cosmetic condition of the frame before you buy.OVERVIEW

We've been safely sending orders around the world since 2010. There's a handy shipping calculator on the shopping cart page so you can see the cost of postage as soon as you've added it to your basket. Your order will be carefully packed and sent with tracking & insurance, we despatch most orders within 2-3 days but larger items and orders placed before the weekend can take an extra day or two to process.
We accept returns, please notify us within 14 days and ensure the item arrives back with us no later than 30 days after the order was received.
We don't charge VAT, however, if buying from outside of the UK please remember that there may be import fees to pay directly to the delivery company before receiving the order.
£15.00

If you're taking part in L'Eroica or any other vintage event, this is fully compliant - so rest assured, the pre-1987 police won't lock you up for having the wrong seatpost binder bolt!
The seatpost binder bolt's been cleaned, checked and graded as good condition, but do take a good look at the detailed photos so you can see the cosmetic condition before you buy.OVERVIEW

Clamp Opening - the minimum and maximum distance between the inside of the nut and bolt heads. The minimum is measured with the bolt tightened as much as possible (for hex head types this may mean the bolt end will stick quite far out of the nut). For the maximum opening we ensure 5-6 mm of thread remainis in the nut for a secure fixing.
Outer Diameter - the part that goes through the frame, most steel frames will take an 8 mm bolt whereas early lugged aluminium frames often have a larger hole that takes a 10 mm bolt diameter.
Bolt Fixing Type - some binder bolts have tightening mechanisms on both sides to secure the seatpost in the frame. Single sided bolts need something else to help; some have knurled parts that grip the inside of the bolt hole, others have a small notched 'key' locator that lines up with a cut-out in the frame (if you have one).

Bluemels bar tape (or grip, or wrap if you prefer), hailing from Great Britain and in production from the 1970s to the 1980s (yet still new & unused after all this time!). Supplied as shown in the photos, enough tape to cover a set of drop bars. The perfect finishing touch for your vintage bike, but great for bikes of the non-vintage variety too!

Pedal Type - this is just a guide to give you an idea of the pedal type, but any pedal can technically be used for any purpose. Track pedals are designed without the pointed 'quill' for safety though, so it's best to only use track pedals for this purpose. Most track pedals, along with quill & aero road pedals are designed to be used with toe clips & straps for best performance.
Pedal Threads - this must match the thread on your cranks. Sometimes it's stamped on the end of the crank arm, but most bikes use a standard thread of 9/16” x 20 tpi. The exceptions being older French bikes, bikes with cheaper one-piece type chainsets and Shimano’s Dyna Drive system (easily identifiable as the pedal holes are about an inch wide!).

Rim Size - this should match the size your bike frame is designed to fit. Standard/full size tubulars only come in one wheel size, these are often referred to as 28" or 700c (sometimes even 27"). These are all the same size, the next size down is 26", so any rims larger than 26" will be standard/full size tubulars.
Bike Type - this is really just a guide, as technically any wheels can be used on any bike as long as everything's compatible. Within reason of course - we wouldn't recommend riding a set of skinny tubular road wheels down a mountain!
Drilling (F/R) - the number of spokes in each wheel (front/rear).
Spacing (O.L.D.) (F/R) - the width of the hubs measured at their widest point, from the outside of the locking end nuts (O.L.D. = Over Locknut Dimension), not including the hub axle. These measurements need to match the inside of your frame and fork’s dropouts. Steel frames can be stretched or squeezed a few mm but it's always best to avoid this if possible, aluminium or carbon frames should never be stretched.
Speed - the number of cogs the rear hub was designed to be used with.
Sprocket Fitting - for cassette hubs this refers to the spline pattern (the shape of the cogs where they slide on to the hub) and this must match the cassette you intend to use. With freewheel hubs it refers to the thread, ISO is the modern standard and is almost exactly the same as older English/British and Italian thread, allowing you to mix and match between these thread types as long as it's not going to be under extreme force, in which case it's best to stick to an exact match. Freewheel hubs with a French thread must be used with a French threaded freewheel.

Extension Length (ctc)* - we measure from the centre of the handlebar clamp to the centre of the shaft, to the point where the stem bolt passes through, to the nearest 5 mm. We always take this measurement in a straight line through middle of the extension, not along the top. In some cases the stem may be stamped with a different extension length as some manufacturers measured differently, but we always use our own measurement for consitency.
Quill Size - the most common size for classic and vintage road bikes is 1", this should be the same as the outside diameter of your fork's steerer column. Oversized steerers found on mountain bikes and later road bikes will be either 1 1/8" or 1 1/4".
Steerer Size (ID) - this is the most important measurement when checking the stem fits your bike. This should match the measurement of the inside of your fork's steerer column, where the stem will be inserted. The standard size for road quill stems was 22.2 mm, or 22.0 mm in France until the 1980s.
Total Shaft Height - measured from the top where the expander bolt head sits, to the bottom of the stem's shaft. To give you an idea of how high the stem can be set, there should be an absolute minimum of 50 mm inserted into the fork steerer, although most stems come with a 'minimum insertion line' to help with this.
Clamp Size - this should match the outside diameter of your handlebars and should be as close as possible to ensure a good and safe fit.

Tube Diameter - most steel frames will have a top tube with an outside diameter of 25.4 mm, this was standard for a long time but there are 'oversized' tubes that have a diameter of 28.6 mm. Most aluminium frames will have larger 31.8 mm tubes, the exception being earlier ones with lugged construction that have 25.4 mm tubes.

Generally Speaking, you only need to worry about freewheel threading if it's French. Modern (Standard ISO) & older British Or Italian freewheel threads are interchangeable in most cases. The only real exception being if you are applying extreme force (very large/strong riders or tandems)
We only sell freewheels with plenty of life left in them. We measure the stack height of each freewheel to determine if your frame has enough space for the specific freewheel.
Please refer to the detailed photographs & information below for sizings & condition.

Drilling - the number of holes for the spokes.
Rim Size - the sizing given by the manufacturer, these can be confusing so we also give the ISO diameter too for clarification.
ISO Diameter - the diameter of the rim at the point where the tyre is seated (bead seat diameter). This is a universal measurement, often displayed on tyres as 28-622 or similar, 28 referring to the tyre width and 622 being the ISO diameter in millimetres.
Valve Type - presta valves are the thin ones and Schraeder are the fatter ones. Schraeder valve holes will also accept the older Dunlop/Woods type valves.
Rim Width (OD) - the width of the rim, measured from the outside of one wall to the other.
Rim Height - the overall height of the rim, measured to the highest point of the rim’s profile.

Position - this determines whether the brake is designed to be used on the front or rear wheel of the bike.
Caliper Type - side pull calipers (single or dual pivot) require nothing more than a brake hole to fix them to as the cable feeds straight into one of the arms, whereas centre pull calipers require a brazed-on or fitted cable hanger to allow the cable to be pulled from the centre.
Brake Drop - measured from the centre of the brake mounting hole to the centre of the wheel rim, measured in a straight line. Your measurment must be within the range of the caliper's given brake drop.
Brake Fixing - this refers to the way the brake is secured to the bike. For recessed allen key fixings the hole to the rear of the the fork crown/brake bridge should measure around 8mm, allowing the allen key head to be inserted and fixed to the brake bolt. External hex nut fixings require a hole of around 6mm, the hex nut is fixed to the protruding part of the brake bolt.
