Chainring count - the number of chainrings on the chainset. Fixed gear track bikes, single-speeds and some geared bikes use a single chainring, road bikes commonly use a double (two rings) and most touring bikes and mountain bikes will use a triple chainset (three rings).

Tooth count - the number of teeth on the chainring(s), the higher the number the harder the gear.

Chain width - this is only relevant for chainsets with a single chainring - if this is ⅛” then you must use a ⅛” chain. All double and triple (and some single) ring chainsets will use a standard 3/32” chain.

BCD - stands for Bolt Circle Diameter (sometimes referred to as PCD - Pitch Circle Diameter) and is only really needed when changing chainrings. To calculate the BCD, measure the distance in millimeters from the centre of any chainring bolt to the centre of an adjacent one and multiply it by 1.709 (you’ll likely need to round the resulting number up or down a little to get your BCD measurement).

*Intended speed - the number of cogs at the back the chainset was designed to be used with. We refer to it as ‘intended’ speed as most double and triple chainsets will actually work with different speeds than originally intended, but the further away you get from the intended speed the more likely you are to experience minor setup issues. Geoffrey Butler Cycles were a South London mainstay during the 1960s and 70s, building high quality frames for club riders and professionals alike. Geoffrey was the brother of the more well known Claud Butler, and sadly passed away just a year after his eponymous brand began in 1956. Several legendary London framebuilders were thought to have built for the shop including both Charlie and Chas Roberts, and also the legendary Cliff Shrub. The shop was one of the last of the London Lightweights to keep going, alas they finally closed their doors in 2021 :(

This repainted Geoffrey Butler is likely to have been built in the 1980s, and is neatly put together with a Reynolds 531 ST (Super Tourist) tube set. Likely built as an 'all-rounder' or light-touring / audax bike, this frame set takes 27" wheels and has ample clearance for mudguards and comfortable, wide tyres. The Super Tourist tube set is lightweight yet strong, it's a good weight for the size and is clearly built with great care.

Mino Denti was a great Italian racer who rode for some fantastic teams throughout the 1960s, he would probably be classed as a super-domestique these days as he was often found riding for the bigger names on his team. After his racing career ended in the late 1960s, Mino worked in the management side of professional cycling before taking the well-trodden path to starting his own bicycle business in 1979. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Mino decided he would do the building himself, and whilst there are very few Mino built frames out there, they're all beautifully finished and often sports unusual features such as hand-crimped tubes or bent seat tubes.

At just 48cm, this Mino Denti Mistral is just about as small a vintage road bike frame as you are likely to find. Built from super lightweight Columbus butted tubing and with aerodynamics in mind, it probably dates from the late 1980s. The shifter mounts are located on top of the downtube and the cables are routed into the downtube, then out again by the bottom bracket where they loop round on the outside of the frame to the derailleurs. The most interesting and unique feature here though has to be the Columbus Air flattened fork and chainstays for super aero appeal, and of course the short head tube promotes a streamlined head down/bum up position on the bike.

Founded in the latter part of the 19th Century, Carlton managed almost 100 years of bicycle manufacturing in the East Midlands. They were amongst the most sought after and readily available British bikes of the 1930s, thanks to some nifty salesmanship from Dan O'Donovan who was to later take over the company, and whose son Gerald became a frame designing legend. Following a buy-out by Raleigh in 1960 and a rebrand for the US market to 'Raleigh-Carlton' the company grew and grew through the bike boom with the doors finally shutting at their Worksop factory in 1981.

This late 1940s or very early 1950s Massed Start is a wonderful post-war all-rounder. Like all Carltons at the time, the Massed Start was mass-produced, but still to some extent customisable by the buyer, with colour, braze-on and lug style options. Featuring distinctively shaped lugs, mudguard braze-ons and fine attention to detail this will build into a wonderful ervey day vintage bike.

From humble South London beginnings Claud Butler built up a hugely successful business, equipping some famous racers and seeing his bikes ridden at World Championships and even the Olympics. In 1928 the enigmatic Butler opened his first shop in Clapham, with a further five shops being opened in just the next four years. During the period before the Second World War Claud Butler were at the forefront of the ‘lightweight’ movement and were highly regarded by club riders looking for a good quality and fast bike. The advent of war greatly affected all businesses and Claud Butler never really recovered, the post was period was one of prosperity and of increased car and television ownership – both of which made an impact on bicycle sales. Claud Butler held on until almost the end of the 1950s by which time the receivers were called in, the name was bought by Holdsworth and continued to be used for high end road machines, the brand being sold again in the late 1980s.

This beautiful original finish Buccaneer frame dates from 1955, right towards the end of the original Claud Butler ownership. This is a bronze welded ‘lugless’ frame, something of a rarity amongst British builders but popular on the continent. There is no model badge left on the frame, but we have identified it as a Buccaneer thanks to the lugless construction, brake cable braze-ons, oval fork blades and pencil stays all point to this model, as seen in the 1955 catalogue. The finish is not perfect but its wonderful to see the two tone paint and original transfers on a frame that is nearly 70 years old.

56cm Gitane Vintage French Road Bike Frame

Though perhaps better known for its mass produced racing bikes produced in France through the 50, 60s and 70s, Gitane sponsored a number of high profile professional teams and have had no less than five Tour de France winners riding for them, including greats such as Bernard Hinault and Laurent Fignon! Gitane have been making bicycle parts and bikes since 1926 and at their height were one of the largest exporters of high quality racing bikes to the USA.

Probably dating from the late 1970s this frameset is a typical mid-range Gitane with a decent lugged construction and basic braze-ons. The chromed rear end implies the frame is of a good quality and the BCM lugs were widely used through the 1970s, the frame has cable guides for front and rear derailleurs, the rear brake cable and has one set of eyelets on the rear. There is plenty of clearance on the rear so a fairly wide tyre with mudguard can be used.

Holdsworth started as a side project by William Frank (Sandy) Holdsworth in the late 1920s after he bought a bike shop in Putney and asked his brother in law to run it. The business did very well and by the end of the 1930s had three more shops. With a reputation already for providing excellent cycling clothing, the company employed the legendary Bill Hurlow to build frames for them in 1938. In the 50s and 60s Holdsworth bought the business and brands of Freddie Grubb, Claud Butler and Macleans, all famous London builders, but they had become too big to offer the personalised frame-building they were once known for. In the 1970s the company split into two factions and Roy Thame took over the W.F. Holdsworth shop, continuing to build bikes under the Holdsworth brand into the 1990s.

This mid 80s W. F. Holdsworth frame is probably one of the frame only options available at the time and is very well put together. The Reynolds 531 tube set is built with precise lugs and a semi-sloping Haden fork crown, finished in a very dark metallic grey, almost black. The frame has no mudguard eyelets but the clearance is good, it would build into a lively and comfortable every day bike, or of course a classic Eroica build!

Founded in the latter part of the 19th Century, Carlton managed almost 100 years of bicycle manufacturing in the East Midlands. They were amongst the most sought after and readily available British bikes of the 1930s, thanks to some nifty salesmanship from Dan O'Donovan who was to later take over the company, and whose son Gerald became a frame designing legend. Following a buy-out by Raleigh in 1960 and a rebrand for the US market to 'Raleigh-Carlton' the company grew and grew through the bike boom with the doors finally shutting at their Worksop factory in 1981.

The Pro-Am was produced in the last few years of the Carlton Worksop factory years, before the company was bought out by Raleigh. Built from Reynolds 531 main tubes it was a comfy, well built bike designed for light touring or every day use. Specced with mid-range aluminium components the bike became the Pro-Am 12 in 1981 when it went up to six speed at the rear.

One of the last Worksop built Carltons to be produced 1981, this Pro-Am 12 still has it's original pale blue paint and transfers. With good clearances, geometry on the comfortable side and double butted Reynolds 531 main tubes this is ready to be built up as a reliable classic or L'Eroica bike.

Mercier cycles built frames and full bikes near Lyon in France for 65 years, sponsoring some top riders who wore the iconic purple and yellow jersey ,including Louison Bobet, Cyrille Guimard, Raymond Poulidor and Joop Zoetemelk. Mercier produced a large range from children's bikes to top end racing machines, they were a high volume builder and had a great deal of success during the 'bike boom' years, producing 150,000 bikes in 1975 alone. Their top end bikes are often finished in purple or pink (or somewhere in between!), like the garish colours of the racing team jerseys, Emile Mercier claiming at the time that “It may not be pretty, but at least we stand out in the peloton”.

Though made in large numbers, the Special Tour de France was a nicely made bike and sat near the top of Mercier's large range of bikes. The name celebrates the company's long history of sponsoring professional race teams, having been involved in every edition from 1933 to 1983.

This Mercier Special Tour de France is an early 1970s model, built from Vitus tubes and with a classic purple paint job. Although not cosmetically perfect, the frame will make the basis for a solid L'Eroica restoration or even qualify for use as a reliable daily commuter.

52cm Bottecchia Battaglin Branded Vintage Italian Road Bike Frame

Though branded with Battaglin decals from the late 1980s, this appears to be a curious mix of a Bottecchia built frame with a Berma pantographed fork. The frame lugs carry the distinctive Bottecchia cut out shape, and the internal cable routing is in a style they used too, whilst the fork carries the Berma 'B' on the fork crown. The purple and neon yellow colour scheme is reminiscent of the Team Jolly Componibili colours, who rode on Battaglins in the 80s and 90s. With Campagnolo dropouts front and rear and a slotted bottom bracket this is a well made frame, regardless of its slightly confused identity!
