Gazelle are perhaps most famous today for producing workhorses, the type produced in the hundreds of millions every year in Dieren, the Netherlands. Back in the 1960s however they were a much different beast.
After the introduction their 'Special Racing Division', much like our famous Special Division Unit of Raleigh in the 1980s, they assembled a professional cycling team sponsored by Dutch Cigar makers, Willem II. Under the management of Ton Vissers, the most successful rider in the Willem II-Gazelle team was undoubtedly Rik Van Looy, but also included greats such as Harn Ottenbros & Peter Post to name just a couple.
The team didn't make it far into the 1970s, but Gazelle's greatest years were yet to come. Their most famous race frame, the Champion Mondial had been introduced to the world by the mid 70s and many famous partnerships followed, with riders such as Roger De Vlaeminck, Jan Raas, Jean Paul Van Poppel, and Scotland's very own Philippa York, then Robert Millar, riding for the TVM-Sanyo-Gazelle in the early 1990s, all raced on the Gazelle Champion Mondial.
Before the Champion Mondial came the Gazelle 'Race'. Lesser known due to its scarcity but by no means less important. It was this model that Rik Van Looy & Harm Ottenbros spent the latter half of the 1960s racing on, and this bike here is purportedly one of the team bikes.
A sterling example of what they rode at the time, kitted out with Zeus gearing from the great Spanish manufacturer, braking as typical from Universal, plus a splattering of British kit from GB too. It's a real piece of history, and when you jump on the saddle you get a real sense of what it was like to race back then. Lightweight, un-complicated bikes that have stood the test of time, ridden by some of the toughest riders of their generation.
The rarity of this one is something rather special, it would make a perfect companion for one of the vintage cyclng events, particularly Eroica Limburg, where you may be lucky to meet one of the legendary Benelux riders themselves. We're certain it'd be talking point, that we can be sure of...
As with all our bikes, it's been fully stripped, inspected & professionally polished & re-built. The frame is straight & true without any dents or dings - please inspect the photos for cosmetic condition as we photograph the bikes so you can see the exact condition of the bike before purchasing.

This 1986 built Champion Mondial is an AB Frame, bult from Reynolds 531 and with less aggressive geometry than the AA Frames of the same period. Available as frame only option, or built with a Shimano 600EX groupset, or Campagnolo Triomphe or Nuovo Record groupset the Champion Mondial AB frame was an off the peg race bike with a winning pedigree. In its original red to white fade colourway with good condition decals, this frame has survived the last 35 years very well, it would be fairly straightforward to put this back together as a wonderful catalogue spec L'Eroica bike.
If you're taking part in L'Eroica or any other vintage event, this frame is of the correct age, so you won't be disqualified for being a rule breaker!
The frame's been carefully checked by one of our mechanics to confirm the alignment's correct and there's no damage to the threads. If there are any minor issues worth noting we will do so in the overview section below. Please take a good look at the detailed photos so you can see the cosmetic condition of the frame before you buy.OVERVIEW

What an honour.
This right here is Jean-Paul Van Poppel's very own team bike from his time with the amateur Gazelle-Vredestein-Campagnolo team of 1983/1984.
Van Poppel, one of the most fierce sprinters of all times, became pro in 1985 for Team Skala, and went on to win points classification in the Tour De France just a few years later in 1987.
The bike came with the number 77 race plate, it's been cleaned & polished throughout but it remains pretty much original to the condition we got it. There is some damage to the front end, with a little bit of rippling underneath the down tube and some flaking of paint near the top tube internal cable routing as you can see from the photos. Most-likely crashed by the man himself, but otherwise the paint & parts are in amazing condition. Given the crash damage it's obviously one for the wall, which is where it belongs really, it's a genuine show-piece and genuinely one of a kind.
Obviously the price tag is high, but this is a very special bike and if there was no crash damage it would have to be twice the price, so it has been taken into consideration.
Check out the photos below or give us a call to arrange to see it in the flesh as it doesn't currently live in our London shop.

This here is a very early example of the Race model, dating back to 1966, and it's an absolute stunner to boot. Specced out with Campagnolo Record kit (Gazelle generally went for Campag or Zeus back then, depending on what the riders wanted, there was no 'catalogue spec' as such). The Campag bar-end shifters were in vogue back then with the Willem II team, and Universal were the brakes to have too.
So there you have it, a mid sixties race machine at its finest, steeped in history. We hope someone can take it back to its native land one day, we could think of nothing better than to let this beauty loose on the climbs of Eroica Limburg, or any of the other vintage cycling events around the world today.
As with all our bikes, it's been fully stripped, inspected & professionally polished & re-built. The frame is straight & true without any dents or dings - please inspect the photos for cosmetic condition as we photograph the bikes so you can see the exact condition of the bike before purchasing.
