56cm Gitane Vintage French Road Bike Frame

Though perhaps better known for its mass produced racing bikes produced in France through the 50, 60s and 70s, Gitane sponsored a number of high profile professional teams and have had no less than five Tour de France winners riding for them, including greats such as Bernard Hinault and Laurent Fignon! Gitane have been making bicycle parts and bikes since 1926 and at their height were one of the largest exporters of high quality racing bikes to the USA.

Probably dating from the late 1970s this frameset is a typical mid-range Gitane with a decent lugged construction and basic braze-ons. The chromed rear end implies the frame is of a good quality and the BCM lugs were widely used through the 1970s, the frame has cable guides for front and rear derailleurs, the rear brake cable and has one set of eyelets on the rear. There is plenty of clearance on the rear so a fairly wide tyre with mudguard can be used.

Chainring count - the number of chainrings on the chainset. Fixed gear track bikes, single-speeds and some geared bikes use a single chainring, road bikes commonly use a double (two rings) and most touring bikes and mountain bikes will use a triple chainset (three rings).

Tooth count - the number of teeth on the chainring(s), the higher the number the harder the gear.

Chain width - this is only relevant for chainsets with a single chainring - if this is ⅛” then you must use a ⅛” chain. All double and triple (and some single) ring chainsets will use a standard 3/32” chain.

BCD - stands for Bolt Circle Diameter (sometimes referred to as PCD - Pitch Circle Diameter) and is only really needed when changing chainrings. To calculate the BCD, measure the distance in millimeters from the centre of any chainring bolt to the centre of an adjacent one and multiply it by 1.709 (you’ll likely need to round the resulting number up or down a little to get your BCD measurement).

*Intended speed - the number of cogs at the back the chainset was designed to be used with. We refer to it as ‘intended’ speed as most double and triple chainsets will actually work with different speeds than originally intended, but the further away you get from the intended speed the more likely you are to experience minor setup issues. The exception being some chainsets intended for 10 speed use or higher, with these it’s better to stick to the intended speed.

Crank length - this is measured from the absolute centre of the bottom bracket hole to the centre of the hole for the pedal.

Pedal threads - the pattern of the thread that your pedals screw into, this is usually stamped on the pedals themselves and most bikes use a standard thread of 9/16” x 20 tpi. The exceptions being older French bikes, bikes with cheaper one-piece type chainsets and Shimano’s Dyna Drive system (easily identifiable as the pedal holes are about an inch wide!).

Bottom bracket type - ‘square taper’, as the name suggests have a square shaped axle that slots into the chainset and ‘cottered’ axles are round and secured by pins - pretty much every bike up until the 1990s would use one of these, cottered being the much earlier system. Since then, different manufacturers have introduced their own systems that are not interchangeable so you must use a chainset that matches.

Although carefully badged up as a Moser, we're not convinced this road frame actually is one underneath the 1980s fade paintjob. Regardless of who actually built this frame, it's been well looked after and is rather finely built. The chrome fork has a Cinelli style crown and the frame is complete with a braze-on gear hanger, spoiler rear brake bridge and a British thread BB. Sportivo Bavikhove is a racing bike specialist shop in Belgium started by local former professional Lieven Malfiet. In the early 80s Sportivo began importing frames from Italy to brand as their own and the frame details from this bike suggest it is one of the earlier bikes they sold. With cut-out lugs, a slotted BB and Campagnolo droupouts this frame is well put together, the chromed fork and headtube lugs and drive side chainstay give it a classic look too.

Designed by British great Ernie Clements, Falcon built lovely quality, nicely finished but affordable frames by hand up until the 1980s. The firm was amongst a number of good quality frame builders in Britain at the time and their bikes were generally built with Reynolds and had quick, race-bred handling inspired by Ernie's racing career. Falcon were also great cycle-sports advocates sponsoring the British National professional team for many years, including reputedly building Tom Simpson's race bikes.

This lovely 1960s Falcon frameset is built with Nervex lugs, delicate pencil seat stays and still mostly sports its original transfers. The early style horizontal dropouts without a gear hanger but with mudguards eyes make it very versatile meaning it could be built in any number of ways.

Though perhaps better known for its mass produced racing bikes produced in France through the 50, 60s and 70s, Gitane sponsored a number of high profile professional teams and have had no less than five Tour de France winners riding for them, including greats such as Bernard Hinault and Laurent Fignon! Gitane have been making bicycle parts and bikes since 1926 and at their height were one of the largest exporters of high quality racing bikes to the USA.

The Gitane Inter Club was an entry level road frame with many of the features of their higher end bikes, including the distinctive honeycomb or 'spiders web' dropouts. Often specced with all French made components they were a widely available export model during the bike boom of the 1970s.

Your order will be carefully packed and sent with tracking & insurance, we despatch most orders within 2-3 working days but larger items can often take a little longer to process.

We accept returns, please notify us within 14 days and ensure the item arrives back with us no later than 30 days after the order was received.

We don't charge VAT, however, if buying from outside of the UK please remember that there may be import duties to pay upon receipt (even with the new post-Brexit trade deals, some countries may still charge you import VAT & clearance fees, so please bear this in mind when purchasing).
