Though most recently known for their successful mountain bike range and race teams, Lapierre have been building bikes for 75 years. Starting in 1946 in Dijon by Gaston Lapierre, the firm was passed to his son Jacky in 1960, with his son Gilles in turn taking over in 1996. One of the first French brands to jump on board the MTB craze in the mid 80s, Lapierre have become synonymous with world-beating race machines, with ten times MTB champion Nicolas Vouilloz piloting their bikes. Unlike some of their contemporaries Lapierre did not get involved with professional road racing until quite late on, but by the early 2000s were having a great deal of success. From a small family business in the 1950s, Lapierre grew with the bike boom and in 1993 were bought out by the huge conglomerate Accell who also now own Raleigh, Batavus and Koga.
We believe this lovely Lapierre step-through frame set dates back to the 1960s and is a classic 'Porteur' style bike, built for practicality and function. Designed for 650B wheels with rear drum brake and front cantilever, this would have been the equivalent of the decked out company car for someone. Complete with the stunning original polished chrome chainguard, super wide mudguards and rear rack this will make a stylish commuter or, with the addition of a front porteur rack, it would no doubt be capable of carrying a decent load around town, just like orginally intended.
If you're taking part in L'Eroica or a similar vintage event, this frame is of the correct age, so you won't be disqualified for being a rule breaker!
The frame's been carefully checked by one of our mechanics to confirm the alignment's correct and there's no damage to the threads. If there are any minor issues worth noting we will do so in the overview section below. Please take a good look at the detailed photos so you can see the cosmetic condition of the frame before you buy.OVERVIEW

Seat Tube (ctc) - we measure from the centre of the bottom bracket shell up to the centre line of the top tube to give a consistent measurement regardless of frame design (ctc means centre to centre).
(Effective) Top Tube (ctc) - this is measured from the centre of the head tube to the centre of the seat tube, along the line where a top tube would be to give you an indication of length.
Chainstay Length - measured from the centre of the bottom bracket shell to the centre point of the rear dropout.
Wheelbase - measured from the centre of the front fork dropout to the centre point of the rear dropout.
Front & Rear Spacing - measured from the inside of one dropout to the other. The dropouts on steel frames can be stretched or squeezed a few mm but it's always best to avoid this if possible, aluminium or carbon frames should never be stretched.
Headset Threads - although it's generally recommended to match threaded parts exactly, with headsets you can technically mix and match, unless you have French or the obscure old Raleigh threads, in which case you need to stick to that type.

Though perhaps better known for its mass produced racing bikes produced in France through the 50, 60s and 70s, Gitane sponsored a number of high profile professional teams and have had no less than five Tour de France winners riding for them, including greats such as Bernard Hinault and Laurent Fignon! Gitane have been making bicycle parts and bikes since 1926 and at their height were one of the largest exporters of high quality racing bikes to the USA.
The Gitane Inter Club was an entry level road frame with many of the features of their higher end bikes, including the distinctive honeycomb or 'spiders web' dropouts. Often specced with all French made components they were a widely available export model during the bike boom of the 1970s.

Probably dating from the late 1970s this frameset is a typical mid-range Gitane with a decent lugged construction and basic braze-ons. The chromed rear end implies the frame is of a good quality and the BCM lugs were widely used through the 1970s, the frame has cable guides for front and rear derailleurs, the rear brake cable and has one set of eyelets on the rear. There is plenty of clearance on the rear so a fairly wide tyre with mudguard can be used.
