Specialized began in the mid 70s when Mike Sinyard began importing hard to find Italian bike parts into the USA, their first branded product was a touring tyre and their first bike range in 1981 included a touring bike, a road bike and the first production mountain bike, the StumpJumper. Being first to mass produce the MTB proved to be a master stroke and the business grew rapidly as the niche sport came to dominate worldwide cycle sales through the 80s and 90s. As one of the first companies to mass produce and develop carbon fibre as a frame material, Specialized began to dominate the road market too, their successes across road, MTB and Cross racing is unparalleled.
Introduced in 1987, the HardRock was Specialized's foray into the entry level mountain bike market. Having been the first brand to mass produce mountain bikes they went on to lead the race scene with the StumpJumper Team and then offered the more affordable range of RockHopper bikes, and the HardRock used the DNA from these bikes at a lower price point. With frames made to their design and some Specialized branded parts made in Taiwan rather than Japan to keep the cost down, the HardRock sold extremely well and is still a staple of the Specialized MTB line-up now.
This 1987 HardRock is almost entirely original apart from a newer (but still retro!) pair of Panaracer skinwall tyres. The frame is made in Taiwan and was designed to be competent off road and comfortable on, with a slightly longer wheelbase than the hugely popular StumpJumper. With a number of Specialized branded parts, and a Suntour Accushift indexed groupset this was a really nicely specced bike for the money back in 1987 and holds it own as a do-it-all bike or 26" wheel tourer now.
The bike's been fully dis-assembled and professionally re-built by one of our mechanics. The frame's straight and true, and everything's been carefully cleaned and re-lubricated where necessary. The Pinarello story is a magnificent one, from Giovanni Pinarello taking the Maglia Nera (Black Jersey for last place) in the 1951 Giro D’Italia to the dominance of Pinarello in the cycling world today. It truly is a fairy tale, from being left out of the 1952 Giro and taking the opportunity to open his own tiny workshop in Treviso, Italy, and from there Giovanni built the Cicli Pinarello brand from the ground up. Bit by bit the success came, and with a reputation for taking the underdogs and turning them into champions, slowly but surely Pinarello went from minnows to the giants they are today.
A mainstay in the Pinarello range for many years, the Veneto utilised their expertise in building top end race frames to construct a lower cost but still high quality frame. Often found built with a slightly heavier guage of tubing such as Columbus Aelle the Veneto was offered as a frame only option with Pinarello's usual wide choice of paint colours and finishes, and also sold as a bike with a full mid-range groupset from Shimano or Campagnolo.
This beautiful example of a Veneto is finished in classic 'Rosso Pinarello' and is built from Columbus Aelle tubing. Mostly specced with an indexed Campagnolo Chorus groupset, with Athena Syncro downtube shifters, this is a really well specced bike from the point when the combined brake/shifter started to take over. Like the rest of the bike the Rigida rims have very little wear, the bike is finished with a 3T bar and stem combination and a Concor saddle rounding off the Italian theme.
The bike's been fully dis-assembled and professionally re-built by one of our mechanics. The frame's straight and true, and everything's been carefully cleaned and re-lubricated where necessary. Born out of a pure passion for cycling, Oliviero Gallegati introduced Somec to the world back in 1973. When we say world, we actually mean the lucky few from the small town of Lugo in the Romagna region of Italy who had the pleasure of being the first cyclist to own these magnificent bicycles. With a name derived from the ‘Societa Meccahnica’ (Mechanic’s society), it’s no surprise that technology was at the forefront of everything that Somec produced, and over the years they became famous not only for their exquisite paint but also for what could be described as futuristic design features, such as the arched brake bridge and integrated seat collar. This kind of detail results in a rare ability to look at a Somec and know that it’s going to be a killer bike to ride, it sounds weird but we’re yet to be proven wrong.
The Air is a very special model, combining Columbus SLX with their profiled Air tubing, the reason it gets the name of course and one of Somec's finest frames available at the time. With wonderful cut-outs & engravings all over the place, a generous helping of chrome & the trademark Somec paintwork it's a real work of art. We don't always see top-end Italian bikes with Shimano kit, but the Sante group was a desirable one back in the 80s and Somec were noted for their support of the Japanese kit, so it's actually quite refreshing to see and certainly makes for an impressive build.
The bike's been taken apart, inspected & re-built in our workshop so we know everything's working as it should. The frame is straight & true without any dents or dings - please inspect the photos for cosmetic condition, we've photographed the bike in detail so you can see the exact condition before purchasing.

Fanini are a true cycling family: promotors; sponsors; team owners; sales reps; manufacturers, and amongst all of this they produced some magnificent hand built bikes. Often equal parts work of art to pure performance, Fanini built bikes that showed what Italian craftsmanship and flair could achieve. Frequently sporting Campagnolo's top end groupsets and a red paintjob, Fanini were built in low numbers throughout the 70s and 80s and are now rather rare to find.

Ellis-Briggs were one of the longest running frame builders in the UK having been established in 1936, and although the business is slightly different frames are still being made in Shipley, West Yorkshire today. From the outset Eliis-Briggs' focus was on quality and craftsmanship, with in-house master-builders and their own enamelling set up. With a country-wide reputation for fast club bikes they sponsored a number of budding racers, with Ken Russell winning the 1952 Tour of Britain aboard one of their frames as an independent rider. Building custom bikes under their own brand name 'Favori', they began to sell their frames into the US market during the bike boom, and though the landscape changed for custom bike builders in the 80s and 90s the name still lives on.
This elegantly finished Ellis-Briggs road frame was probably built in the early 1980s and is kitted out with Campagnolo's world-beating Super Record groupset. The frame is built with Reynolds 531 Professional tubing, the replacement for 531 SL and one of Reynold's lightest tube sets at the time, and hand-finished lugs. With a high quality enamelled blue paint job and chrome dropouts this is a very pretty bike, typical of their output at the time. The lightweight and equally good-looking Super Record groupset was a revelation when released and became the groupset of choice for professional cyclists and those budding amateurs that could afford it!

Bit by bit the success came, and with a reputation for taking the underdogs and turning them into champions, slowly but surely Pinarello went from minnows to the giants they are today.
The 1990s was the decade that Pinarello truly dominated, and it was during that time that the Asolo model was introduced. At the start of the 90s there were only 3 bikes available in the Pinarello catalogue; Asolo, Treviso & Montello (the latter being the top model), but do not be tricked into thinking the Asolo was ‘entry level’. Every frame was produced to the same high standard and shared their trademark ride quality of a ‘proper’ racing bike, only the tubing used differed from model to model. The Asolos were built initially from Columbus Cromor and then Dolmen tubing, made especially for Pinarello by Dedacciai, both of which yielded only a touch heavier frames than the Columbus SL & SLX frames ridden by the Pinarello team icons such as Pedro Delgado or Giovanni Battaglin.
This Pinarello Asolo we believe to be from 1991, most likely built from Dedacciai Dolmen tubing, and as you can see from the weight this is a genuine lightweight - just topping the 9kg mark on the scales. This Pinarello is no exception to Pinarello’s high level of quality, and it rides exactly as you’d expect, fast, responsive and turning heads at every opportunity.
The spec is as you would see in the catalogue at the time, it’s fantastic to see such an original bike that’s now almost 30 years old. The Campagnolo Athena kit is wonderful stuff, similar to Pinarello, Campag didn’t allow any old kit to be produced in the 1990s. The market was becoming highly competitive by this point so everything not only had to perform well, but also had to look good, and Athena components sure do that.
The bike's been taken apart, inspected & re-built in our workshop so we know everything's working as it should. The frame is straight & true without any dents or dings - please inspect the photos for cosmetic condition, we've photographed the bike in detail so you can see the exact condition before purchasing.

The Lazzaretti brothers Remo and Romolo started their bike building business in Rome in 1916. Romolo was the racer, who had some success internationally and Remo was the businessman who's accumen helped their little shop thrive. Now two shops and still selling bikes, the business did not produce a lot of handbuilt frames, though what examples there are are very nicely made and of an excellent quality.
This eye-catching mid 80s Lazzaretti road bike combines some of the best technology of the time and a beautifully made frame in a ready to ride L'Eroica compliant package. Built in Italy from Columbus' top end SLX tube set and the newly realeased aerodynamic 'Air' fork blades and crown, this would have been a top of the range frame at the time. The green to yellow fade paint job contrasts with the chromed rear end and fork blades, and the frame has a number of brand pantographs. Put together with a quality Campagnolo Victory groupset and 3TTT finishing kit, this is a good looking and competent machine just waiting for someone to take it out for a spin.
