Famed first and foremost for her wheel-building, Pat Hanlon was an extraordinary woman in the predominantly man's world of post-war bike racing and building. Pat started her first shop just down the road from Pedal Pedlar HQ in Tottenham in 1957, continuing to build wheels for world champions and local racers alike, introducing a range of frames bearing her name in 1960 built by the legendary Vic Edwards. Later frames were also built by other well known London builder's Les Ephgrave and Tom Board. Those who are still lucky enough to own a pair of Pat's original wheels are no doubt carefully looking after them!

This frame has an interesting mix of features that make it hard to place time-wise. The Campagnolo 1060 semi-horizontal dropouts and clamp-on down tube shifter pip all point to late 60s/early 70s but the under bottom bracket cable routing and allen key brake fixings suggest later, likely the back end of the 1970s. Regardless, the lug work is very nicely done and the frame is nice and light, especially considering the clearance for wider tyres and mudguard eyelets.

Sportivo Bavikhove is a racing bike specialist shop in Belgium started by local former professional Lieven Malfiet. In the early 80s Sportivo began importing frames from Italy to brand as their own and the frame details from this bike suggest it is one of the earlier bikes they sold. With cut-out lugs, a slotted BB and Campagnolo droupouts this frame is well put together, the chromed fork and headtube lugs and drive side chainstay give it a classic look too.

The Professional was the name given to the high end race frames built by Batavus through the 1970s, 80s and into the 90s. They were available in a wide range of tube sets and configurations throughout that period, and often built from the top tube sets from Reynolds (531C and 531P) or Columbus, including SL, SP and SLX. The frames were a direct competitor to the famous Gazelle Champion Mondial, and they stand up rather well we must say.

This particular Professional is probably from the mid to late 1980s, built from Reynolds 531 'Professional' (or 531P) which was the lightest version of 531 available at the time. This frame is also built with the neat minimal Cinelli fork crown, a Dardanne BB shell and Campagnolo dropouts, resulting in a very well put together frame.

With a history spanning almost a century, and with both world and Italian national champion wins, Berma are perhaps not as widely known as they should be. Hailing from Padova, Italy, Berma built very fine frames in the Italian race tradition - lightweight, aggressive, beautiful and often bedecked in the finest Italian parts from the period. Legendary contract builders Billato built for the brand during their early years too.

This Berma Professional is probably from the 1980s and is built from Italian Oria TT 0.9 tubing. The red and white graphic paint job is typically Italian and of the time, the contrasting chrome forks and drive side chainstay show great attention to detail. This is a classic Italian frameset in a smaller size and will make a vintage (or maybe even neo-retro!) build.

This compact French road frameset carries no brand or obvious signs of any specific builder, but it was obviously built with great care using Colmbus Aelle tubing and good quality lugs. Probably dating from the mid 90s, the frame has semi-horizontal dropouts and shot-in seatstays giving it a sleek, racy look. The black and green fade paint work contrasts nicely with the chrome fork and chromed rear end and is in fantastic sparkling condition.

This unknown steel track frame has a number of quality features and probably dates from the 1960s or 1970s. Though there are no identifying marks or stamps, the five digit frame number implies it was built by a small volume builder and the fork dropouts are by Simplex, so perhaps pointing to a French or British builder. Regardless of where it was made, and by whom, the frame is very well put together with lovely long point lugs, a Fischer 'twin plate' fork crown and heavy duty rear dropouts. The fork has been drilled for a brake but the rear has not.

Holdsworth started as a side project by William Frank (Sandy) Holdsworth in the late 1920s after he bought a bike shop in Putney and asked his brother in law to run it. The business did very well and by the end of the 1930s had three more shops. With a reputation already for providing excellent cycling clothing, the company employed the legendary Bill Hurlow to build frames for them in 1938. In the 50s and 60s Holdsworth bought the business and brands of Freddie Grubb, Claud Butler and Macleans, all famous London builders, but they had become too big to offer the personalised frame-building they were once known for. In the 1970s the company split into two factions and Roy Thame took over the W.F. Holdsworth shop, continuing to build bikes under the Holdsworth brand into the 1990s.

This mid 80s W. F. Holdsworth frame is probably one of the frame only options available at the time and is very well put together. The Reynolds 531 tube set is built with precise lugs and a semi-sloping Haden fork crown, finished in a very dark metallic grey, almost black. The frame has no mudguard eyelets but the clearance is good, it would build into a lively and comfortable every day bike, or of course a classic Eroica build!

Although carefully badged up as a Moser, we're not convinced this road frame actually is one underneath the 1980s fade paintjob. Regardless of who actually built this frame, it's been well looked after and is rather finely built. The chrome fork has a Cinelli style crown and the frame is complete with a braze-on gear hanger, spoiler rear brake bridge and a British thread BB. There is a Columbus Aelle decal present, and the 27.0 mm seat post size and overall frame weight suggest this is right, making it a great frame for a period 80s build.

Olagnero were a small boutique shop in Milan whose frames were allegedly built by legendary contract builder Vanni Losa, also of Milan. This frame is built from Columbus Aelle, and it proudly states 'made in Italy' on it, and the lug cutout is a similar shape to Losa's 'V' signature, but we can't be entirely sure it's a Losa built frame. Whoever the builder, they've done a fine job, with neat internally routed rear brake, rear entry seat stay lug and Cinelli fork crown make for a very refined frame.

Founded in the latter part of the 19th Century, Carlton managed almost 100 years of bicycle manufacturing in the East Midlands. They were amongst the most sought after and readily available British bikes of the 1930s, thanks to some nifty salesmanship from Dan O'Donovan who was to later take over the company, and whose son Gerald became a frame designing legend. Following a buy-out by Raleigh in 1960 and a rebrand for the US market to 'Raleigh-Carlton' the company grew and grew through the bike boom with the doors finally shutting at their Worksop factory in 1981.

The Pro-Am was produced in the last few years of the Carlton Worksop factory years, before the company was bought out by Raleigh. Built from Reynolds 531 main tubes it was a comfy, well built bike designed for light touring or every day use. Specced with mid-range aluminium components the bike became the Pro-Am 12 in 1981 when it went up to six speed at the rear.

One of the last Worksop built Carltons to be produced 1981, this Pro-Am 12 still has it's original pale blue paint and transfers. With good clearances, geometry on the comfortable side and double butted Reynolds 531 main tubes this is ready to be built up as a reliable classic or L'Eroica bike.

Peugeot are perhaps the best known mass producers of bicycles and have a long and illustrious history. Cycles Peugeot began producing Penny Farthings in 1886, quickly moving with the technological advancements of the day and becoming one of the world's largest and most successful bike builders through the post war period and bike boom years. With an astonishing 500 models of bike available in the 1970s Peugeot were ubiquitous in Europe and North America, sales were aided by ongoing success with the factory professional team which won an unprecedented 10 Tour de France titles. The company strived to use French built parts on all of its bikes for many years, and there are many brilliant examples of their bikes fully decked out with parts from Stronglight, Simplex and Mavic.

The Puymorens was Peugeot's top of the range steel framed race bike and was used by the pro team in continental classic races. Built from Reynolds 531 'Professionnel' with their neat quill seatpost, the Puymorens was a lightweight race bike designed to go fast.

This mid 80s Puymorens has been refurbished by Argos at some point and carries Argos branding instead of the original Peugeot team logos. We assume that at the same time it was repainted the frame was converted to internal brake cable routing as this model was not available with this specification and there is a faint trace of where the original top tube cable stops would have lived. It is nicely finished in a typical Peugeot grey with chromed dropouts and drive side chainstay and some period brand decals.
