The brainchild of composite visionary Brent Trimble, along with former employee's of Trek and Blackburn, Kestrel was launched onto the scene in the late 1980s by Cycle Composites Inc. Beginning with a game-changing monocoque road bike that graced the front cover of magazines and was immediately raced to devestating effect in 1987, followed by the first full suspension carbon MTB (with V Brakes!) in 1988. Through the early adoption of computer aided design and aerodynamics, Kestrel can be credited with creating the genesis of the high-performance carbon road bike that is so prevalent today.
Taking eight years to design, test and prepare for manufacture the 4000 emerged as a fully formed, ready to race super bike in 1987. The first mass-produced carbon monocoque road bike available, it looked like nothing else, and importantly rode like nothing else too. The new technology that went into the building the 4000 resulted in a stiff, comfortable, light, well balanced frame, something of a first for carbon. To top it off it also had a strong aerodynamic benefit with its profiled shape and internal cable routing. As well as the cutting edge technology of the time, renowned bike designer and engineer Keith Bontrager advised on the geometry which pulled together into a phenomenal race bike.
This example of the legendary Kestrel 4000 frame was built in 1990, towards the end of the production run and is spaced for 6 or 7 speed drivetrains at the rear. With the classic Imron white paintwork in great order and very few marks, this rare machine was obviously well looked after and is ready to give many more years of service.

Peugeot are perhaps the best known mass producers of bicycles and have a long and illustrious history. Cycles Peugeot began producing Penny Farthings in 1886, quickly moving with the technological advancements of the day and becoming one of the world's largest and most successful bike builders through the post war period and bike boom years. With an astonishing 500 models of bike available in the 1970s Peugeot were ubiquitous in Europe and North America, sales were aided by ongoing success with the factory professional team which won an unprecedented 10 Tour de France titles. The company strived to use French built parts on all of its bikes for many years, and there are many brilliant examples of their bikes fully decked out with parts from Stronglight, Simplex and Mavic.
We believe this is a 1961 Peugeot PL-8 in original 'Italian Blue' colour. The paintwork and decals all look orignal and are in pretty good order for a bike over 60 years old. Designed for every day use, the PL-8 had 4 gears at the rear and a double chainset up front with comfortable swept back handlebars, the sort of bike that was once ubiquitous on the streets of any French city. With a neatly designed rear rack, mudguards and integrated dynamo lights included this will make a super town bike, commuter or period porteur bike.

Ciöcc bagan in the 1970s when ex-racer Giovanni Pelizzoli turned his hand to building high quality frames in Northern Italy. Pelizzoli is considered one of the greatest frame-builders of his generation and many Ciöcc were raced through the 70s and 80s. The top of the range bikes were named after successes in San Cristobel in 1977 and the 1980 Moscow Olympics (the Mockba '80) though there were no doubt many other victories on rebranded Ciöcc frames too as was the norm at the time. Pelizzoli parted company with the brand some time in the 1980s but the company continued building with the knowledge he had imparted to them and they still make bikes (albeit far different ones!) today.
Although this delightfully finished frame has none of the trademark Ciocc pantographs or engravings, the details match those of the Designer 84 model it's badged as. With a very neat black to dark purple metallic fade paint job with chromed rear triangle and fork, this is a very well put together frame. The lugs and small frame details are all in line with other Ciocc frames of the period too. Internal rear brake routing and a braze-on for the front mech date it to the mid 1980s, and it has obviously led an easy life up to now.

A Staffordshire institution, Henry Burton cycles have been building and selling bikes out of their small shop since 1950. Henry and his wife Joyce were both keen cyclists; Joyce became national road champion in 1950 and Henry started to build custom frames from their shop around the same time, the shop is still a family business with the third generation now involved. Specialising in lightweight road machines with hand cut lugs, Henry Burton custom frames were sold alongside less glamourous frames built by contract builders.
We believe this interesting road frame to be from the early 1970s, and was likely built by Henry Burton at the shop in Stafford as a custom order. With lightened hand-cut long-point lugs, an unusual drilled fork crown and wrap-over seat stays, it is not a standard frame by any means. It's a handsome frame in good original condition, ready to be put back together and given a good run out.

An important character in the South London cycling scene, Ken Bird was a master wheel-builder, team mechanic and shop owner who, along with his brother Alec, pushed the boundaries of frame manufacture. Starting with Claud Butler in the 1950s, Ken went on to manage a shop for Hinds and then Clive Stuart Cycles, he was the British team mechanic for three years until 1968, the year Tom Simpson died during the race. Though legend has it Ken and Alec were not exactly the best of friends, it is thought that Alec built some frames branded Ken Bird, with other local builders including Holdsworth and Roberts known to have built others. Ken Bird had a reputation in the 1970s for pushing how light a competitive TT machine could be, with lugs, frame tubes and components all heavily modified, drilled and lightened.
This early 1970s TT machine has all the hallmarks of a high end, lightweight TT bike as was typical of the race-winning machines Ken Bird were producing at the time. With a two digit 'BBC" frame number, drilled bottom bracket and rear dropout plus neatly brazed-on brake bolts, this was a machine built purely for performance. Though most recently known for their successful mountain bike range and race teams, Lapierre have been building bikes for 75 years. Starting in 1946 in Dijon by Gaston Lapierre, the firm was passed to his son Jacky in 1960, with his son Gilles in turn taking over in 1996. One of the first French brands to jump on board the MTB craze in the mid 80s, Lapierre have become synonymous with world-beating race machines, with ten times MTB champion Nicolas Vouilloz piloting their bikes. Unlike some of their contemporaries Lapierre did not get involved with professional road racing until quite late on, but by the early 2000s were having a great deal of success. From a small family business in the 1950s, Lapierre grew with the bike boom and in 1993 were bought out by the huge conglomerate Accell who also now own Raleigh, Batavus and Koga.
We believe this lovely Lapierre step-through frame set dates back to the 1960s and is a classic 'Porteur' style bike, built for practicality and function. Designed for 650B wheels with rear drum brake and front cantilever, this would have been the equivalent of the decked out company car for someone. Complete with the stunning original polished chrome chainguard, super wide mudguards and rear rack this will make a stylish commuter or, with the addition of a front porteur rack, it would no doubt be capable of carrying a decent load around town, just like orginally intended.

Owen Blower was a successful British racer in the late 1950s who went on to start a shop in Leicester, selling bikes bearing his name until the 1980s. Racing predominately in Britain, Owen took the title of Best British All Rounder (BBAR) and set a new 12 hour time trial record that would stand for 9 years in 1958. Owen also went on to race across the continent, including the Peace Race, and finished 5th overall in the 1959 Milk Race. His shop in Leicester sold British built lightweights, specialising in time trial machines which were built by contract builders including Mike Kowal of Autostrada.
This neat 1970s Blower branded road frame was probably built by Mike Kowal at Autostrada. With Campagnolo ends, long-point lugs and a Reynolds 531 tube set this is a solid frame that will build into a super every day bike. The original transfers are showing their age but could be cleaned off and replaced fairly easily.
