Plug Type - expanding plug inserts can be adjusted within the given range to fit different handlebar inner diameters. 'Push-in' plugs cannot do this, however they are usually designed to flex a little to give you some wiggle room.

Plug Insert Diameter - this needs to be a close match to the inside diameter of your handlebars, although the plug diameters can be increased a little using tape (cloth handlebar tape is perfect for this). The ranges given for expanding plugs are rounded to the nearest 0.5 mm.

End Stop Diameter - the width of the end cap that butts up to the ends of your handlebars.

Width (ctc)* - measured at the ends of the drops, from the centre of one side to the other (ctc), to the nearest cm. In some cases the bars may display a different width as some brands measure outside to outside rather than ctc, but we always use this measurement for consistency.

Shape - Classic' drops have a smooth curve, 'anatomic' have multiple angles for different hand positions, 'compact' are short reach with a shallow drop and randonneur bars are usually classic in shape but rise up then flare out at the drops.

Clamp Size - this should match the internal diameter of your handlebar stem clamp, and should be as close as possible to ensure a good and safe fit.

Drop (ctc) - from the top flat section to the bottom of the drops, measured from the centre of one to the other with the flat part at the end of the drops parrallel to the ground.

Extension Length (ctc)* - measured from the centre of the handlebar clamp to the centre of the steerer clamp, to the nearest 5 mm. This measurement is taken through the middle of the extension, not along the top or bottom.

Steerer Size (OD) - OD means outside diameter, this is the most important measurement when checking the stem fits your bike. This should match the measurement of the outside of your fork's steerer column, where the stem will be clamped.

Bar Clamp Size - this should match the outside diameter of your handlebars and should be as close as possible to ensure a good and safe fit.

Stack Height - the height of the part that clamps to the forks. This is the minimum amount of space you will need on the fork's steerer column for the stem to fit (minus a few mm as the top of the steerer tube needs to sit just below the top of the stem).

Angle - the angle of the stem's extension in relation to the the fork steerer. Bear in mind the steerer sits at the same angle as the head tube, so a 90 degree stem would not be parallel to the ground. Some manufacturers refer to this as rise or drop, in which case an 80 degree stem would drop 10 degrees from a right angle. Most a-head stems can be flipped although it does depend on the design.

Trek are perhaps one of the biggest and best-known names in cycling, but despite currently producing around 1.5 million bikes a year, their first few years were very different. From the embers of a failed chain of bicycle retail shops, Dick Burke and Bevis Hogg decided they could build their own high-end steel frames in the USA to compete with the imported European and Japanese bikes that were selling so well in the mid-'70s. Building an initial run of around 900 touring frames from a barn in Wisconsin in 1976, they doubled their production year on year through the late '70s, and by 1980, they had to build a new factory down the road to meet demand. By then, Trek had established a network of US dealers and started to build high-end steel road bikes in the USA, and by 1983, their first mountain bike. By the mid-'90s, MTBs were 80% of their sales, and by innovating with new materials and building methods, specifically bonding aluminium and carbon tubes together, they increased their international sales, dealers, and total bike sales.

This original 1986 Trek Pro Series 560 is a rare find in this size and condition. Built in the USA from Reynolds 531 tubing, it is a surprisingly light and nimble frame for an entry-level bike. With Trek's proprietary cast lugs, a neat semi-sloping fork crown, and the bold crimson and yellow paint job, it will build into a great-quality road bike for the smaller rider.

If you're taking part in L'Eroica or a similar vintage event, this frame is of the correct age, so you won't be disqualified for being a rule breaker!
